Prevocational and Vocational Training
PCS #1 is committed to providing a smooth
transition into life after graduation and/or discharge from
school or graduation. Along with transition into the least
restrictive learning environment during a student's study
at PCS #1, a positive transition into the community is the
ultimate goal and informs all staff decisions in student planning.
Transition planning begins at age fourteen
and is included in the student's IEP. The plan includes a
complete transition assessment and evaluation, determining
the future educational and treatment needs. This includes
a preparation of a new educational plan and correspondence
or visitation to future educational or job placements.
Prevocational and vocational training at
PCS #1 is an expanding program, based on the evolution of
student interests and needs while working closely with the
family or care-providers. Prevocational assessment and skill
development including career planning and interest assessment
will be explored during the initial transition planning. According
to the student's ability and interests, prevocational training
may include job application skills, resume preparation, and
job interview techniques. Survival skills taught may include
opening a bank account, locating an apartment, or successful
transition into a group living situation. Current vocational
training includes jewelry making, flower arrangement, and
computer training.
PCS #1 also coordinates with local and
state workability programs for vocational training. Community
integration is the central ingredient in a student's social-emotional
standing and successful transition into life after graduation.
